Dreaming of insects in the Bible: meaning

In the Bible insects belong to the plagues of Egypt: gnats, flies and locusts. At the same time Proverbs praises the ant as an example of wisdom. In the Christian tradition an insect dream can therefore go two ways: something overwhelming you, or a lesson in diligence.

Within this tradition

In Exodus ten plagues strike Egypt because Pharaoh will not let the people go. Three of them are insects: gnats or lice rising from the dust, swarms of flies filling the houses, and locusts eating everything green. They are images of something that overwhelms you and that you cannot stop by your own strength. A dream about swarms of insects can be read in that light as the feeling of being overwhelmed.

At the same time Proverbs says: go to the ant, you sluggard, consider her ways and be wise. Without a commander she gathers her food in summer. Ants in a dream can therefore also be read positively: diligence, preparation and the value of small steps.

Joel speaks of a locust plague, but also of restoration: I will repay you for the years the locust has eaten. For someone dreaming of something that seems to devour everything, that is a familiar comfort: loss need not be final.

As always, the tradition tests a dream against prayer, Scripture and people you trust. Often an insect dream is simply about small worries piling up.
