Dreaming of spiders in the Bible: meaning

The Bible rarely mentions the spider, but it does mention the spider's web, and always as an image of something fragile. In the Christian tradition a spider dream is therefore often read as a question: what are you actually trusting in?

Within this tradition

In the book of Job, the trust of someone who forgets God is compared to a spider's web: whoever leans on it falls through. The prophet Isaiah uses the web in a similar way: those who weave injustice make webs that cannot serve as clothing. In both texts the web stands for something made with great effort that still does not hold.

That is why, within the tradition, a dream about spiders and webs is often held up against your own life. Is there something you are building on that is less solid than you think? A plan, a certainty, or a way of living in which you have slowly spun yourself in? The image does not have to condemn. It invites you to look.

Christian movements differ in how they approach dreams. Some see dreams as a possible way in which God speaks, others mainly as processing the day. What they share is discernment: a dream is tested against Scripture, prayer and people you trust before any conclusions follow.

A dream full of spiders that was mostly frightening is therefore not quickly read as a message. The fear itself can, however, tell you something about what is on your mind.

Common variations

Falling through a spider's web

Fits the image from Job: something you leaned on turns out not to hold.

A web you are weaving yourself

A question about what you are building, and whether it is worth what you are making it for.

Clearing away webs

Often read hopefully: cleaning up, giving room again to something that was entangled.

A spider in a church or holy place

Read more as something clouding or neglecting your life of faith than as something coming from outside. The question is what has been left lying there.

Frequently asked questions

Does a spider stand for evil in the Bible?

Not as such. The Bible mainly uses the spider's web, as an image of fragile trust and futile work.

Is this a message from God?

Dreamkin does not say so. The tradition tests such questions through prayer, Scripture and people you trust.
