Dreaming of keys
Keys in a dream are about access: to a place, an opportunity, a solution or a part of yourself. Finding or receiving keys is read favourably almost everywhere, losing keys as the feeling that you can no longer reach something.
Interpret your own dreamWhy you dream about this
Keys are small things with a big role: without a key you cannot get into your house, your car or your work. In dreams they therefore often stand for access and control. Whoever has a key can get in; whoever has lost it is left outside.
The most common version is losing your keys. That dream often comes in busy periods, when you feel you no longer have an overview, or when you cannot reach something any more: a solution, a relationship, a version of yourself. A key that does not fit, or a door that will not open, feels like an opportunity you cannot seize.
On the other side is finding or receiving a key, one of the most favourable dream images. It is often read as a solution presenting itself, an opportunity or trust being given to you. Who gave you the key then says a lot: someone entrusting you with something, or letting you into their life.
Traditions give keys great weight. In Christianity Peter receives the keys of the kingdom. In Islam God holds the keys of the unseen. And in the Talmud God keeps three keys in his own hands: those of rain, birth and resurrection.
What it means in each tradition
The same dream. 5 traditions. 5 different ways of seeing it.
Christian
In the Bible keys stand for authority and access. Jesus gives Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and in Revelation the risen Christ holds the keys of death. A key in a dream is read along those lines as access, trust and responsibility.

The Quran says that the keys of the unseen are with God: only He knows them. In classical dream interpretation keys stand for authority, knowledge and provision, and a door that opens for relief and a solution.

The Talmud names three keys that God does not entrust to a messenger but keeps in his own hands: the key of rain, of birth and of the resurrection of the dead. In the Jewish tradition a key in a dream therefore touches on what ultimately does not lie in your own hands.

In Haitian Vodou Papa Legba is the keeper of the gate between the world of people and that of the lwa. In Haiti he is often connected with Saint Peter, who carries the keys of heaven. Keys, doors and gates in a dream are therefore often connected with Legba in a Vodou reading.

In Santería Elegguá is the orisha who opens and closes the roads. He is honoured first in every ceremony, for without him nothing reaches the other orishas. Keys, doors and crossroads in a dream are therefore often connected with Elegguá in Santería readings.
