Dreaming of a mermaid in wicca: meaning
In Wicca and nature-based practice the mermaid belongs to the element of water, to the west and to the tides of feeling. A dream of her is read as a message from the emotional and intuitive side of life.
Within this tradition
Water is the element of emotion, intuition and the unconscious in Wicca, and the mermaid is its most familiar figure. She is the part of the self that lives under the surface, beautiful and not entirely understood. In a modern witchcraft reading she is also a guardian of the tides and of the moon's pull on the sea.
Sources for this are mixed. The undines of the Renaissance writer Paracelsus were the spirits of the element of water, and later occult writing took them over. European folklore adds the siren, the selkie and the merfolk of coastal stories. Wicca has no single scripture, so practitioners draw on all of these and on their own experience.
A mermaid with a song is usually read as intuition calling, and the question is whether you are listening. A mermaid combing her hair or holding a mirror points to self-image and to how you see yourself. One who stays in the water asks you to respect a boundary. One who comes onto land asks what in you wants to cross from feeling into action.
The phase of the moon is often noted, since the tides follow it. A dream under a waning moon speaks of release, under a waxing moon of something that wants to grow. If the dream was frightening, practitioners commonly give it time and grounding. Other water-women figures such as Mami Wata or the [watra mama](/traditions/winti/watra-mama/) of Winti are different traditions with their own meanings, and Wicca does not claim them.
Common variations
A mermaid with a mirror
A classic image of self-knowledge. What you see in the glass, and whether you look away, is the message.
A mermaid and the moon
Brings the tides to mind. A full moon is read as strong feeling, a waning moon as release.
A mermaid coming onto land
Read as something from the emotional world asking for room in everyday life.
A mermaid who will not speak
Intuition that has not yet found words. Many practitioners write the dream down and come back to it.
