Dreaming of a mermaid

A mermaid in a dream is usually an image of attraction and depth: something beautiful that belongs half to the surface and half to feelings you cannot yet see to the bottom of.

Why you dream about this

A mermaid is a creature of two worlds, which is why she is such a lasting dream image. Half of her belongs to the land and half to the water, half to the person you recognise and half to the animal you cannot. A psychological reading usually follows that doubleness: the dream touches something attractive and unreachable, a feeling that lives below the surface, or a part of yourself that does not fit the life you show in daylight.

The feeling in the dream counts for more than the figure. A mermaid who sings, one who watches from the rocks and one who pulls you under are three different dreams. Wonder and longing point one way, unease and being drawn against your will another. Notice, too, whether you were on the shore, in a boat or in the water yourself.

The traditions do not agree, and none of them has one fixed reading. Mermaids are not scriptural in Islam, which knows the sea mostly through its manuals of dream interpretation. In Christianity the siren of Greek myth became a medieval warning about temptation. Hindu stories offer water-women who are lovers and also tests of a path. Chinese tradition tells of the jiaoren, whose tears become pearls, and Wicca sees in her the element of water and the unconscious.

This page does not cover Mami Wata, Lasirèn or the watra mama of Winti, nor the orishas Yemayá and Ochún. They are different figures with their own communities, not other names for the mermaid, and they are only read by people who know them. Nothing here predicts anything.

What it means in each tradition

The same dream. 6 traditions. 6 different ways of seeing it.

Islamic

Mermaids are not mentioned in the Qur'an or in the hadith, so Islamic dream interpretation reads this image through the sea and through the three kinds of dream. The sea and the creatures in it are read carefully and without rulings.

Christian

The Bible does not know mermaids. The siren came into Christian imagination from Greek myth, and the Christian reading of this dream comes from the sea in Scripture and from the old warning about temptation.

Hindu

Hindu stories are full of beings who live in the water: naginis, apsaras and the river goddess herself. A mermaid in a dream is read through these figures, which can be lovers, guides or tests.

Zhou Gong

Chinese tradition has its own mermaid-like people of the sea, the jiaoren, whose tears turn into pearls. A dream of such a figure is read through the sea as a place of hidden riches and through pearls and silk.

Wicca

In Wicca and nature-based practice the mermaid belongs to the element of water, to the west and to the tides of feeling. A dream of her is read as a message from the emotional and intuitive side of life.

Winti

In Winti a mermaid is rarely just a fairy-tale figure. She recalls the watra mama, the mermaids of the water who appear in many Surinamese stories, and a dream about her is read as contact with the inhabited world of the water.

These differences are not opinions about one another. Each tradition reads a dream from within its own worldview, and that worldview decides what an image carries.

Common dreams about a mermaid

A mermaid singing

Song stands for invitation and for something you cannot ignore. Read it by the feeling: wonder points to longing or creativity, unease to a pull you are wary of.

Seeing a mermaid from the shore

You are watching from a safe distance. Many readings take this as noticing a desire or feeling without yet stepping into it.

Being a mermaid yourself

Often read as living in two worlds at once, or as a freedom you feel in the water that daily life does not allow.

A mermaid pulling you under

The frightening version of the dream, usually about feeling overwhelmed by attraction or emotion rather than about any danger. If it returns and disturbs your nights, a doctor or psychologist is the right person to talk to.

Finding a mermaid on the beach

A creature out of her element asks what in you is out of its element, and what needs to get back to the water.

Frequently asked questions

What does dreaming of a mermaid mean?

Most readings link it to attraction, depth and a hidden side of yourself. The traditions differ in the details, so what the mermaid did and how you felt matter more than the figure.

Is dreaming of a mermaid a good or a bad sign?

Neither is fixed. It is not read as a prediction anywhere on this site, and wonder and unease in the dream point to different readings.

Is a mermaid in a dream the same as Mami Wata?

No. Mami Wata is a spirit venerated in West and Central Africa and the diaspora, with her own devotees. The European mermaid is a related image at most, and the two should not be merged.

What if the dream frightens me or keeps coming back?

A dream that keeps returning or disturbs your sleep deserves attention from a doctor or psychologist, whatever it means symbolically.
