Dreaming of a mermaid in Islam: meaning
Mermaids are not mentioned in the Qur'an or in the hadith, so Islamic dream interpretation reads this image through the sea and through the three kinds of dream. The sea and the creatures in it are read carefully and without rulings.
Within this tradition
The classical manuals of dream interpretation, which circulate under the name of Ibn Sirin, work from the plain images in a dream. They have a good deal to say about the sea and about water. Many read the sea as something large and powerful, sometimes a person with authority, sometimes a great undertaking. A mermaid is not a standard entry in them, so a reading of this dream follows from the parts: the sea, the woman, the tail, the song.
The Qur'an speaks of the sea as a gift. In Surat an-Nahl (16:14) God is the one who made the sea serviceable so that you may eat fresh meat from it and take out ornaments to wear. That gives the sea a place in the tradition that is more about provision and wonder than about threat. A dream set there is often read as being about what sustains you or tempts you.
Mermaid-like beings do appear in Arabic storytelling, for instance among the tales of the Thousand and One Nights, where sea-people live under the water and sometimes marry. That belongs to literature, not to scripture, and the manuals do not treat it as a reliable key to dreams. Some popular belief links beings of the water with the jinn, but practice varies widely and the classical manuals set no rule.
Above all the tradition asks what kind of dream this was. It distinguishes the ru'ya, the true and good dream, the hulm, the disturbing dream, and the dream that comes from the self. A dream of a beautiful creature in a calm sea, with no fear, is usually placed with what the self has been dwelling on. No ruling is given here.
Common variations
A calm sea with a mermaid in it
A calm sea is read favourably in the tradition. The mermaid is then read as something attractive within reach rather than as a warning.
A mermaid and a storm
A rough sea is usually read as a call to patience, sabr, and to care in what you take on. It is not a prediction.
Being pulled into the water
Falling into water against your will is often placed with the disturbing dream, which the tradition says does not need to be told to anyone. Many families teach seeking God's protection and not describing it.
A beautiful woman who vanishes into the sea
In the manuals a woman who is beautiful but does not stay is often read as a worldly attraction that does not last. This is one reading among several.

Is dreaming of a mermaid haram?
A dream is not an act and carries no ruling. The tradition treats dreams as something to be received with care, not as something you are held responsible for.
Should I tell someone about a frightening dream?
The common guidance in the tradition is that a good dream may be shared with someone who wishes you well, while a disturbing dream is better not told. Many also recite the usual words for protection.
