Dreaming of a mermaid in Hinduism: meaning
Hindu stories are full of beings who live in the water: naginis, apsaras and the river goddess herself. A mermaid in a dream is read through these figures, which can be lovers, guides or tests.
Within this tradition
No Hindu text gives a standard meaning for a mermaid, and the English word does not have a single Sanskrit equivalent. The reading is built from nearby figures. The first is the nagini, a serpent-woman who lives in rivers and underground water. In the Mahabharata the naga princess Ulupi draws Arjuna down into the Ganga while he bathes, and takes him to her home beneath the water. It is a tale of a woman of the water who chooses.
The second is the apsara, a heavenly woman associated with water and clouds. Urvashi and Menaka are the best known. Apsaras are sometimes lovers and sometimes tests of a sage's discipline, as when Indra sends Menaka to Vishwamitra. A beautiful figure from the water can therefore mean desire and also a distraction from a path you are on.
The third is the ocean itself. In the churning of the ocean of milk, many beings and treasures rise out of the water, among them Lakshmi and the apsaras. The sea is where wealth and beauty are hidden and also where they come from. The goddess Ganga rides a makara, a creature of the water, part fish, which is the nearest Hindu image to a mermaid.
Many families read a dream of this kind as a sign of attraction or of abundance rather than of danger, depending on the feeling. Murky or rough water is read with more caution than clear water. As always it is a reading of your own situation, not a prediction.
Common variations
A woman rising from a river
Recalls Ulupi and the rivers of the Ganga: a figure who invites you into another world. The question is whether you wanted to go.
A mermaid with a fish's tail
Brings the makara to mind, the water creature that carries the river goddess Ganga. Read as the movement of the river rather than as a person.
Pearls or treasure from the sea
Recalls the churning of the ocean, where treasure rises out of the water. Usually a favourable image of something valuable being brought up.
Being distracted by a beautiful figure
Echoes Menaka and the sage. A dream asking what is drawing your attention away from something you care about.

Is there a Hindu mermaid?
Not by that name. Naginis, apsaras and the makara come closest, and each has its own stories and meanings.
Is a mermaid dream a good omen in Hinduism?
It is not treated as an omen. A calm scene with clear water is read favourably, while rough or murky water calls for caution.
