Dreaming of shoes in the Bible: meaning

In the Bible too Moses takes off his shoes at the burning bush. And in the parable of the prodigal son the father has sandals put on the returning son: a sign that he is received back as a son. In the Christian tradition shoes are about reverence, dignity and coming home.

Within this tradition

At the burning bush Moses hears: do not come any closer, take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. It is one of the best-known images of awe in the Bible. A dream in which you take off your shoes can be read in that light as a moment of pausing at what is holy or precious.

In the parable of the prodigal son the son comes home destitute. He expects at most to be a servant, but the father says: bring the best robe, put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Slaves went barefoot, sons wore shoes. Receiving new shoes in a dream is therefore often read along those lines as restoration, forgiveness and coming home.

Paul writes about the armour of God and mentions shoes that make you ready to bring the gospel of peace. There shoes are an image of being ready to set out. A dream about shoes you cannot find can thus also be a question: what am I ready for, and what not yet?

As always, the tradition tests a dream against Scripture, prayer and people you trust. Losing your shoes in a dream is often simply about busyness or insecurity.
