Dreaming of vomiting in the Bible: meaning
The best-known image of vomiting in the Bible is hopeful: the great fish spits Jonah out onto dry land, and he gets a second chance. Proverbs uses the image as a warning: as a dog returns to its vomit, a fool repeats his folly. A dream about vomiting is read within that tension.
Within this tradition
Jonah flees from God's command, is thrown overboard and swallowed by a great fish. For three days and three nights he sits in the belly of the fish, where he prays. Then God speaks to the fish, and it spits Jonah out onto dry land. Jonah is given the command again, and this time he goes. A dream in which something spits you out, or in which you stand on dry land after nausea, can be read in that light as a second chance after a time of being stuck.
Proverbs 26 says: as a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly. Peter quotes it for those who relapse into old faults. A dream in which you return to something foul you vomited earlier can thus be read as a warning not to fall back into an old pattern.
In Revelation 3 Christ says to the church of Laodicea: because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out. A dream about nausea can thus also ask about lukewarmness: where in your life are you half-hearted?
As always, the tradition tests a dream against prayer, Scripture and people you trust. Sometimes such a dream is simply about an upset stomach.
