Dreaming of war in the Bible: meaning

The Bible speaks a great deal about war, but also points beyond war. Isaiah sees a time when swords are beaten into ploughshares. Jesus calls peacemakers blessed. And Paul describes the armour of God for a struggle that is not against people. A war dream is read within that tension.

Within this tradition

Isaiah 2 describes a vision: the nations shall beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. It is one of the most famous texts about peace, and a dream in which weapons are laid down or a war ends is read hopefully in that light.

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus says: blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. A dream in which you mediate or make peace can thus be read as a calling to seek peace in a conflict around you.

Paul writes to the Ephesians that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and describes a spiritual armour: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. A dream in which you fight can be read in that light as an inner or spiritual struggle, in which faith and truth are your protection.

Whoever has war dreams because of what is happening in the world can bring that fear into prayer. Jesus says: you will hear of wars, do not be alarmed. As always, the tradition tests a dream against prayer, Scripture and people you trust.
