Dreaming of war
A war in a dream is usually about conflict: between you and others, or within yourself. Someone who dreams of war at a time of real war on the news is often also simply processing fear and helplessness.
Interpret your own dreamWhy you dream about this
War dreams can be intense: explosions, fleeing, hiding, soldiers invading. They are more common than you might think, especially when there is war on the news. Then the dream simply processes what you see and feel during the day: fear, grief and helplessness. For people who experienced war themselves, or whose parents or grandparents did, such dreams can also carry memories or inherited fear.
When there is no direct cause, a war dream is often about conflict in your own life. A quarrel that escalates, a struggle at work, tensions in the family or a conflict within yourself: two sides that disagree. Fleeing from a war can be about wanting to avoid conflict. Fighting yourself, about the feeling that you must stand up for something.
Hiding during a bombing can point to seeking safety in a restless period. A war ending, or making peace, is usually read hopefully: a conflict coming to rest. Being wounded in a war can stand for the damage a conflict does to you.
Traditions often see war as an image of an inner struggle. The Bhagavad Gita takes place on a battlefield. The Dhammapada says that whoever conquers themselves is greater than whoever defeats thousands in battle. And the Bible speaks of an armour of God.
What it means in each tradition
The same dream. 3 traditions. 3 different ways of seeing it.
Christian
The Bible speaks a great deal about war, but also points beyond war. Isaiah sees a time when swords are beaten into ploughshares. Jesus calls peacemakers blessed. And Paul describes the armour of God for a struggle that is not against people. A war dream is read within that tension.

The Bhagavad Gita takes place on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Arjuna does not want to fight his own family, and Krishna teaches him about duty, the true self and acting without attachment. Many Hindus also read that war as an image of the inner struggle. A war dream can be read in that light.

The Dhammapada says: though one conquers a thousand times a thousand men in battle, whoever conquers themselves is the greatest victor. Buddhism therefore reads a war dream above all as an image of inner struggle, and of anger and fear calling for attention.

What does a dream about war mean?
Usually conflict, with others or within yourself. In times of real war the dream also processes fear and helplessness.
Does a war dream predict a real war?
No. Such a dream is about what you feel and experience, not about the future.
Why do I dream of war if my (grand)parents lived through one?
Fear and stories can be passed between generations. Whoever is troubled by it can talk to someone about it.
