Dreaming of water in the Bible: meaning

In the Christian tradition water carries a strong, largely hopeful weight: cleansing, baptism, and the beginning of something new.

Within this tradition

Water runs throughout the Bible, and almost always at turning points: the crossing of the sea, the baptism in the Jordan, water from the rock.

A dream of clear water, washing or immersion is therefore read gently and hopefully within this tradition, even where the image itself feels unsettled. Something is washed away, or something begins.

Storm water is another matter. That is connected with trial, and with whether you trust that you are carried. Its best-known image is the storm on the lake, where the question is not about the water but about trust.

Thirst and drought carry their own weight, connected with longing and with a season in which something is missing.

Jesus himself also uses water as an image. At the well in Samaria he tells a woman that whoever drinks of the water he gives will never thirst again: it becomes in them a spring welling up to eternal life. And Revelation ends with the river of the water of life, clear as crystal. A dream about a spring, a river or quenching thirst is therefore often read in that light as longing for God, and as a promise that the longing is answered.

Frequently asked questions

Is this about baptism?

Sometimes that association is recognised, but the tradition does not read an image apart from the dreamer's life.

What does drowning mean in a Christian reading?

Usually being overwhelmed. Psalm 69 begins: save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. The tradition reads such a dream as a cry for help, which may be brought into prayer.

Is a water dream a message from God?

Dreamkin does not say so. The tradition tests such questions through prayer, Scripture and people you trust.
