Dreaming of being chased in Islam: meaning

Classical Islamic interpretation often counts chase dreams among the hulm: the disturbing dream, which the tradition holds merits no interpretation.

Within this tradition

This is one of the clearest examples of how this tradition works. Where many dream dictionaries assign meaning to every nightmare, the Islamic tradition does explicitly the opposite.

A dream that wakes you afraid and is confused or threatening in nature is counted among the hulm, attributed to whisperings. The recommendation is then not to seek what it means, but not to speak of it, to seek protection, and to get on with your day.

That is not evasion. It guards against the weight people give to fearful dreams, and against interpreters who make use of that fear.

Where the dream is experienced as ru'ya, clear and lasting, classical interpretation looks at who or what pursued you, and above all whether you escaped. Escaping is read favourably.

The sunna also gives a simple preparation for sleep that many Muslims keep against bad dreams: performing wudu, lying on the right side, reciting Ayat al-Kursi, the verse of the throne, and the last three short chapters of the Quran. According to tradition whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi before sleep remains under protection all night. Whoever is often chased in dreams can therefore look first at that evening routine, and at the tension of the day.

Common variations

Waking up frightened

Counted within the tradition as hulm: not something to interpret, but a reason to seek protection.

Escaping the pursuer

If the dream is clear and stays with you, escaping is read favourably.

Being caught

Read more heavily, but the tradition treats it as a possibility, not a prediction.

Not being able to move while being chased

Often sleep paralysis, a physical phenomenon many people know and that is harmless.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Islam not interpret nightmares?

Because the tradition distinguishes hulm from the true dream. A disturbing dream is not read as a message, and that is a deliberate protection.

So what should I do instead?

The advice is not to tell others about it, to seek protection and not to make too much of it.

What is Ayat al-Kursi?

The verse of the throne, Quran 2:255, which many Muslims recite before sleep as protection.
