Dreaming of cheating in Islam: meaning

The Islamic tradition is very clear here: a dream is not evidence. A dream about infidelity is usually counted as hulm or as what occupies your own soul, and the Quran explicitly warns against suspicion.

Within this tradition

The tradition distinguishes true dreams from confusing dreams, hulm, and from dreams that arise from your own thoughts and worries. A dream in which your partner cheats falls, according to most scholars, into one of those last two groups. In the tradition hulm is even attributed to Satan, who wants to sow sorrow and discord. Then the whole point is that you do not act on it.

The Quran is strict about suspicion. Believers are asked to avoid much suspicion, because some suspicion is sin, and not to spy on one another. Under Islamic law, whoever accuses a partner of infidelity also needs strong evidence; a false accusation is seen as a serious offence. A dream can never be that evidence.

The advice after such a dream is therefore the same as with any disturbing dream: seek protection with God, do not tell the dream around, and do not let it drive a wedge between you and your partner. Someone who notices that the dream touches a real insecurity can discuss that feeling, calmly and without reproach.

If someone dreams that they themselves are unfaithful, the same applies. You are not responsible for what you dream. The tradition only asks that you feed nothing from it you do not want, and that you protect your bond.

Seeing your partner with someone else

Usually hulm or your own worries. No accusation may be built on it.

Being unfaithful yourself in the dream

Not a sin and not a hidden wish. The advice is to seek protection and cherish the bond.

Arguing about infidelity

Can point to unrest in the relationship that needs attention, without the content of the dream being true.

Recurring dreams about infidelity

A sign that something is occupying the soul. Calm, prayer and an open conversation are advised, not distrust.
