Dreaming of your ex in Islam: meaning

The Islamic tradition is sober about dreams of an ex. They are usually counted as hadith an-nafs, what occupies your own soul, rather than true dreams. Basing decisions on them is explicitly advised against.

Within this tradition

The tradition distinguishes three kinds of dream: the true dream, the ruya, seen as favourable and meaningful; hulm, confusing or disturbing dreams that need not be interpreted; and dreams that arise from what you think and feel during the day. An ex who returns in your dreams falls, in the eyes of most scholars, into that last category. You knew that person, had feelings and lost them, and the soul is processing that.

That is why the tradition rarely reads such a dream as a sign to get in touch or go back. On the contrary: someone who doubts after a divorce or break-up is advised not to build that doubt on a dream. For a real decision, for example about restoring a marriage, the tradition has the prayer for guidance, istikhara, and the advice of people with knowledge and good intentions.

If the dream is unsettling or stirs desires you do not want to feed, the usual advice for disturbing dreams applies: seek protection with God, do not tell the dream around, and do not make too much of it. If the dream is peaceful instead, for example a meeting without resentment, that can be read as calm that has come into your heart.

So the tradition mainly asks for honesty with yourself: what is occupying your soul, and what do you need to let it rest?

Common variations

A peaceful meeting with your ex

Can be read as calm in your heart: the resentment or sorrow has grown smaller.

Your ex asking you for something

Not read as an instruction. It points more to something still occupying your soul.

Recurring dreams about a former partner

A sign that processing is not yet finished. The advice is rest and prayer, not action.
