Dreaming of a dog

A dog in a dream stands almost everywhere for a relationship: loyalty or threat, protection or aggression. How the dog behaves towards you usually says the most.

Interpret your own dream

Why you dream about this

Dogs are among the most commonly dreamt animals, and that makes sense: many people live with a dog, were bitten by one as a child, or walk past them every day. Dreams bring those experiences back. People who own a dog often simply dream about their own animal, and such dreams are usually about the bond itself.

Beyond that personal layer, the dog in dreams is an image of relationships. A loyal dog walking beside you is read favourably almost everywhere: support, friendship, someone looking out for you. A dog that barks, growls or bites points more to tension with someone around you, or to an instinct of your own that will no longer be tamed. The expression 'the black dog', as an image for low mood, sometimes resonates as well.

Traditions diverge strikingly here. In Islamic interpretation the dog is often an adversary of little standing, although the Quran also knows the faithful dog of the People of the Cave. The Bible mostly mentions the dog unfavourably, for example as an image of returning to old folly. Wicca links the dog with loyalty, protection and the goddess Hecate, who is honoured at crossroads and accompanied by dogs.

So look above all at what the dog did, whose it was, and whether you felt safe.

What it means in each tradition

The same dream. 6 traditions. 6 different ways of seeing it.

Islamic

In classical Islamic interpretation a dog is usually read as an adversary or someone of little standing. But the tradition also knows the useful dog: the hunting dog, the guard dog, and the faithful dog from the chapter of the Cave.

Christian

The Bible mentions dogs more often than you might think, and mostly not flatteringly. Yet the Christian tradition does not read a dog dream as a judgement, but as a question: what do you keep going back to, and who stands beside you?

Wicca

In wicca the dog is a protector and a guide. Dogs are connected with Hecate, goddess of crossroads and transitions, and a dog in a dream therefore often appears at moments of choice.

Winti

A dog in a dream is rarely read as an ordinary pet in Winti. Among practitioners a biting dog often counts as a blockage on your path, and howling at night is linked in stories with Leba.

Santería

In Santería dogs belong to Babalú-Ayé, the orisha of illness and healing, who in Cuba is connected with Saint Lazarus, depicted on crutches with dogs licking his wounds. A dog in a dream is therefore often read in Santería readings as loyalty, care and healing.

Hindu

In Hinduism the dog is a guardian and a companion of the gods. It accompanies Bhairava, stands beside Dattatreya, and in the Mahabharata turns out to be Dharma himself. A dog in a dream is often read as loyalty, protection or a test of what you stand for.

These differences are not opinions about one another. Each tradition reads a dream from within its own worldview, and that worldview decides what an image carries.
