Dreaming of your period in Judaism: meaning
In Judaism the laws of niddah belong to menstruation, and at its end immersion in the mikveh, the ritual bath. Many women experience that immersion as a moment of renewal. A dream about menstruation can therefore be read in the Jewish tradition as cycle, separation and renewal.
Within this tradition
The laws of niddah go back to Leviticus 15 and 18. In Orthodox practice couples keep apart during menstruation and a number of days afterwards, after which the woman immerses in a mikveh, a bath of natural water. Then they come together again. Many women describe that cycle of distance and return as something that renews the relationship each time, although there are large differences within Judaism: liberal movements deal with it very differently, and it is also discussed critically.
The mikveh itself is a powerful image. Immersion in living water stands for transition and renewal, not for dirt being washed away. Converts and sometimes brides immerse too. A dream about immersing after menstruation can be read in that light as a new beginning after a period of distance or rest.
The Jewish tradition also has prayers and customs around fertility, such as the prayer of Hannah in the temple, who prayed for a child so fervently that the priest thought she was drunk. For someone who dreams of menstruation while wishing for a child, that story can give comfort.
The rabbis stay sober: many dreams come from the thoughts of your own heart, and a dream around your own period often simply comes from the body.
