Dreaming of your period
A dream about your period is often about cycles, fertility, letting go and renewal. For many women such a dream is also simply the body making itself felt, for example just before or during menstruation.
Interpret your own dreamWhy you dream about this
Menstruation is one of the most physical dreams there is, and often the explanation is physical too. Many women dream about it just before or during their period, when wishing for a pregnancy, or out of tension about a late period. The dream then processes what occupies body and mind.
Symbolically, menstruation is about cycles: something ends, so that something new can begin. A dream about getting your period can thus stand for closing a phase, letting go of an expectation, or a fresh start. For someone wishing for a child, the dream can carry disappointment or tension; for someone who does not want to be pregnant, relief.
Unexpected bleeding in public, or blood on your clothes, is often about shame and the fear that others see something you want to keep private. A period that does not stop can point to the feeling of being drained or giving too much. A man who dreams of menstruation can read the dream as an image of sensitivity, vulnerability or a cycle in his own life.
Traditions deal with menstruation very differently. In Islam and Judaism rules of purity belong to it, closed with a ritual washing or immersion. In Hinduism there are both restrictions and a temple where the goddess's menstruation is celebrated. With persistent or worrying complaints a doctor is the right place, not a dream interpretation.
What it means in each tradition
The same dream. 3 traditions. 3 different ways of seeing it.
Islamic
In Islam menstruation is called hayd. The Quran mentions it in the chapter of the Cow, and fiqh has rules for it: during menstruation a woman does not pray or fast, and afterwards comes the ghusl, the ritual washing. In classical dream interpretation menstruation is often read as cleansing and a new beginning.

In Judaism the laws of niddah belong to menstruation, and at its end immersion in the mikveh, the ritual bath. Many women experience that immersion as a moment of renewal. A dream about menstruation can therefore be read in the Jewish tradition as cycle, separation and renewal.

In Hinduism two sides exist alongside each other. In many families restrictions apply during menstruation, such as not going to the temple. At the same time the Kamakhya temple in Assam celebrates the goddess's menstruation every year, during the Ambubachi Mela. A dream about menstruation can therefore be read in Hindu readings both as rest and as divine fertility.
