Dreaming of your mother in Hinduism: meaning

In Hinduism the mother stands close to the divine: an ancient Upanishad tells students to see their mother as a god, and in the Devi tradition God herself is Mother. A mother dream is read with that reverence and warmth.

Within this tradition

In the Taittiriya Upanishad a teacher gives his students some instructions at parting, among them: matri devo bhava, let your mother be a god to you. It is one of the best-known lines about parents in the Indian tradition. In many Hindu households the gesture that goes with it is still alive: children touch their parents' feet and ask for their blessing, the ashirwad, at festivals, before exams or before a journey. How strictly that is done differs from family to family.

In the Devi tradition, especially the Shakta currents, the divine itself is addressed as Mother. The Devi Mahatmya sings of the goddess who abides in all beings in the form of a mother. Durga, Lakshmi and Kali each have a character of their own, but are often called upon as mother. The earth, Bhumi, is also called mother: a verse of the Atharva Veda says that the earth is my mother and I am her son. So for believers a mother dream can blend with a sense of being held by something greater. Not every current draws that link equally strongly, and a dream about your own mother remains in the first place about her.

The loveliest image of a mother's love may be that of Yashoda and the young Krishna. In the Bhagavata Purana she sees the whole universe in his mouth, and promptly forgets it, because her love drowns out her knowledge. In the bhakti tradition this is called vatsalya, parental love as a path to God. A dream of a mother who cares or comforts is often read along those lines as love without conditions.

On the nature of dreams the tradition is sober. The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad describes how in a dream the dreamer makes their own world from impressions and memories. A dream about your mother then often simply arises from your bond with her. A mother who blesses is read as support and protection; a mother who is angry or silent, as an unfulfilled expectation or a distance that asks for attention.

If such a dream returns, many families ask an elder or a pandit for advice. Dreamkin prescribes no actions. With a painful or unsafe bond with your mother, a psychologist or someone you trust is the first person to talk to.

Frequently asked questions

What does a mother mean in Hindu dream interpretation?

Care, blessing and the weight of duty and connection. In the Devi tradition the divine Mother resonates in it too.

Is dreaming of a goddess the same as dreaming of your mother?

No. A dream about a goddess is read through the tradition of that goddess. A dream about your mother is first about her and about your bond.
