Dreaming of your mother in Buddhism: meaning
In Buddhism the mother is the image of love without conditions and of a debt you can never fully repay. A mother dream is therefore often read as an invitation to gratitude and to compassion, for her and for yourself.
Within this tradition
In the Anguttara Nikaya the Buddha says that parents are to their children like Brahma, their first teachers, and that a child can never fully repay their parents, not even by carrying them on their shoulders for a whole lifetime. It is a strikingly strict and at the same time warm image: the mother who cared gave something that cannot be returned in kind. In many Buddhist countries a mother dream is read against that background, as a reminder of gratitude.
In the Karaniya Metta Sutta, the well-known verse on loving-kindness, stands the image on which the whole practice rests: as a mother would protect her only child with her life, so one should cultivate a boundless love towards all beings. The mother here is the measure of selfless love. Someone who is cared for by their mother in a dream can read that as a reminder of that measure, and as an invitation to give such love to others and to yourself.
In the Tibetan tradition this goes one step further. There it is taught that in the endless series of lives every being has at some time been your mother, and that this is a reason for compassion. A dream in which your mother is frightened or in need can along those lines be an invitation to extend your compassion to everyone who suffers, without saying anything about her actual situation.
The Buddha too has a mother story of his own. According to the tradition Queen Maya dreamt that a white elephant entered her side, and she then conceived the Buddha. She died a week after his birth, and in the later tradition he taught her in the heaven of the thirty-three gods. Someone with a mother dream full of light and calm may hear an echo of this story.
At the same time Buddhism stays sober about dreams. The ancient Milindapañha names habit, memory and state of mind as causes. Not every dream need be a message. Someone who dreams often of their mother is probably dreaming of what occupies them. The answer in both cases is compassion, and with a painful or unsafe bond that includes help from someone trained for it.
