Dreaming of a party in the Bible: meaning

The Bible is full of feasts. Jesus performs his first sign at a wedding in Cana, tells of a father who throws a feast for his lost son, and compares the kingdom of God to a great banquet to which everyone is invited. A party dream is therefore often read hopefully in the Christian tradition.

Within this tradition

In John 2 the wine runs out at a wedding in Cana. At his mother's request Jesus turns water into wine, and the best wine comes last. It is an image of abundance and of joy that God gives. In Luke 15 the father of the prodigal son has the fattened calf killed: let us eat and celebrate, for this son of mine was dead and is alive again. A party in a dream can be read in that light as coming home, forgiveness and restored relationships.

In the parable of the great banquet, in Luke 14, the invited guests decline with excuses. Then the host has the poor, the crippled and the blind brought in from the streets. Whoever dreams of not being invited, or feels unworthy, can find comfort in that: precisely those who stood outside are brought in. Conversely a dream in which you decline an invitation can ask what you consider more important.

Revelation speaks at the end of the wedding supper of the Lamb, an image of fulfilment. Many Christians therefore also see every feast as a foretaste of God's joy.

As always, the tradition tests a dream against prayer, Scripture and people you trust.
