Dreaming of police in Islam: meaning

The Quran speaks of a community that calls to the good, enjoins what is right and forbids what is wrong. In classical Islamic dream interpretation guards and holders of authority often stand for justice, order and accountability. Police in a dream can be read along those lines.

Within this tradition

Classical Islamic society had the shurta, a kind of police or guard, and the muhtasib, an official who oversaw fair trade and public morals. Their task was connected with the Quranic principle of enjoining the good and forbidding the wrong. Justice, adl, is one of the central values of Islam.

In the works attributed to Ibn Sirin, a guard or holder of authority is often read as someone with power over the dreamer, or as accountability being asked. Being seized by them can be read as a worry, or as an encouragement to set something right. Being protected by a guard, as safety and help. Being a guard yourself, as responsibility for others.

According to a well-known tradition the Prophet said: each of you is a shepherd, and each is responsible for what has been entrusted to him. A dream in which you keep watch yourself can thus be read as a reminder of your responsibility for family, work or community.

Whoever is arrested in a dream for something they did not do can find comfort in the story of Yusuf, who was imprisoned innocently and eventually cleared. As always in tabir, the dreamer counts.
