Dreaming of a wolf in Islam: meaning

In the story of Yusuf his brothers tell their father that a wolf ate him, while they themselves threw him into a well. In classical dream interpretation a wolf therefore often stands for deceit, an enemy or someone with unjust power.

Within this tradition

The story is in the chapter Yusuf. Jacob says in advance that he fears a wolf will eat Yusuf, and the brothers use exactly that fear as a lie: they come back with his shirt, stained with false blood. The wolf is innocent in the story, but becomes the image of a false accusation and of deceit within the family.

In the works attributed to Ibn Sirin, a wolf often stands for an enemy, a thief or an unjust ruler: someone cunning who waits for their chance. A wolf attacking you can thus be read as someone who wants to harm you. A wolf you drive away or kill, as victory over such an enemy. A wolf that becomes tame or comes into your house, sometimes as a thief who shows remorse.

At the same time the story of Yusuf teaches that a wolf can also be a false accusation. Someone who dreams of being accused of something they did not do can find comfort in Yusuf: the truth came to light in the end. Jacob responded with sabr jamil, beautiful patience.

As always in tabir, the dreamer counts. Someone afraid of a particular person often dreams about them; such a dream is about that fear.
