Dreaming of snow in Islam: meaning

In a well-known supplication that according to tradition the Prophet said at the start of prayer, he asks God to wash him of his sins with water, snow and hail. Snow therefore stands for cleansing in the Islamic tradition, and is often read favourably in classical dream interpretation.

Within this tradition

The supplication is in the hadith collections of Bukhari and Muslim: O God, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the east from the west; O God, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt; O God, wash away my sins with water, snow and hail. Many Muslims still say these words after the opening takbir of the prayer.

In classical dream interpretation snow is often connected with relief from worries, healing and blessing, especially when it falls in its season and harms no one. Snow falling softly on the land can be read as rizq, provision, and rest. Snow falling out of season or causing damage, such as a snowstorm threatening people or harvest, is read more cautiously, as a trial or worries for a community.

Whoever holds snow in their hands in a dream or washes with it can read it as cleansing and forgiveness, in the line of the supplication. Melting snow is sometimes read as a worry disappearing.

As always in tabir the dreamer counts: someone who lives in a cold country and dreads winter also simply dreams of snow.
