Ta'wil
Interpreting the deeper, hidden meaning behind a dream image, the core of the interpretive method.
Where ta'bir is the general term for dream interpretation as a field, ta'wil describes more specifically the step of interpretation itself: tracing a dream image back to the meaning behind it. The word is also used more broadly for Qur'anic exegesis, which shows how seriously this interpretive method is taken within Islamic scholarship. With dreams it often means seeking the linguistic, symbolic or contextual layer behind an image, rather than taking the image literally.
