Earth, high winti from Congo and Loango

Who are the Luangu?

The name Luangu refers to Loango, a historical kingdom on the coast of Central Africa, in the region of present-day Congo. Many enslaved people brought to Suriname came from that region, and their religious heritage lives on in Winti. The Luangu are counted among the earth winti and have a high rank.

Practitioners describe the Luangu as mostly kind, helpful and protective. They are linked with Mbumba, the rainbow snake from Central African traditions, an image of connection between heaven and earth.

Luangu in dreams

In dreams, according to practitioners, Luangu are sometimes recognised by dancers in colourful cloths reminiscent of Javanese fabrics. A rainbow or a snake of many colours can also point in that direction, because of the link with Mbumba.

Because the Luangu are seen as protective, such a dream is usually not read as a threat. Rather as presence: something that walks with you and supports you.

A heritage from Central Africa

The Luangu show how layered Winti is. The tradition did not come from one place, but grew from the traditions of different peoples from West and Central Africa who came together in Suriname. Names such as Luangu, and Kromanti too, recall that origin.

Someone who wants to know whether a Luangu belongs to them does not find out within the tradition through a dream alone, but through a luku with someone who knows the family line.
