Fodu (papa winti)

Fodu, also called papa winti, are powerful snake spirits of the earth. They live on plantations, in yards and in villages. That is why, within Winti, a snake on family land is rarely seen as a coincidence.

Who are the fodu?

The fodu, or papa winti, belong to the earth winti. They are snake spirits bound to a place: a plantation, a yard, a piece of land where a family has lived for generations. They are described as powerful and not to be underestimated.

The best-known snake in this context is the dagwe, the boa. Practitioners tell that a snake which carried a fodu and was killed can become a kiri fodu: a force that follows the killer's family for generations. Whether you take that literally or not, it shows how seriously snakes on family land are taken.

Fodu in dreams

Dreams of a snake living on the family yard or a piece of land are often read within the tradition as a sign that a papa winti lives there. Such a place has power, and that power asks for respect. In practitioners' answers the advice recurs not to cut trees there at random and not to urinate there.

Physical complaints in the legs and feet are also sometimes linked with fodu in stories. Dreamkin only describes that as part of the tradition: complaints always call for a doctor.

What fodu ask

Practitioners mention a snake ring, a chair or walking stick for the spirit, and respectful treatment of the place where it lives. Shrimp is mentioned as an example of a trefu for fodu carriers, but as always: trefu are personal.

Someone who keeps dreaming of snakes on family land is usually advised within the tradition to have a luku done: a consultation with a lukuman or lukuvrouw, who can see whether it concerns a family winti and what is being asked.

How this winti can show itself in dreams

Killing a snake on family land

Practitioners are cautious here: killing a snake carrying a fodu is said to affect the family. A reason for a luku.
