Kromanti

Who are the Kromanti?

Kromanti are high-ranking warrior spirits. There are tapu kromanti in the sky, whom practitioners also call flying gods, gron kromanti on the earth and watra kromanti in the water. The name recalls Kormantse, a fort on the coast of present-day Ghana, from which many Akan-speaking people were carried off.

Kromanti stands for courage, protection and breakthrough. According to practitioners it is the only winti pure enough to reach Anana, the Creator. That is also why Kromanti is said to be the first to leave someone who does harm.

Kromanti in dreams

Large birds are often linked with Kromanti, especially birds that fly high or enter a room. A peacock-like bird entering a room in a dream was read by one practitioner as Kromanti making itself known. A snake can also carry Kromanti force.

A striking phenomenon is speaking in an unknown language in your sleep. Practitioners call it kromanti tongo: a winti speaking through you. Red and blue clothing is sometimes linked with the djebri kromanti, a war spirit, although the same image can also point to an ingi. A luku makes the difference clear.

What Kromanti asks

Kromanti is honoured with white, white cloths, pimba (white clay) and sometimes a ring with a white stone. Yaw kromanti is said to be polite and fond of jenever. Pork is mentioned as an example of a trefu for Kromanti carriers, but trefu remain personal.

Because Kromanti is so pure, it asks for a pure life. Someone who dreams of Kromanti is often advised within the tradition to learn more about this winti, and when in doubt to have a luku done.
