Apuku

Apuku are forest spirits and the messengers of higher winti. They are clever, can imitate other winti and are often the first to warn you in a dream. A jealous male apuku is often mentioned with relationship problems.

Who are the apuku?

Apuku are forest and nature spirits. They belong to the forest pantheon and are linked with trees, animals and places far from habitation. Within the hierarchy of the winti they often work for higher winti, as messengers and doers.

Practitioners describe the apuku as clever and quick. An apuku can imitate other winti, which sometimes makes dreams hard to read: in one answer on the forum an apuku says, as it were, that sometimes it is him and sometimes it is not. That is exactly why an apuku dream so often leads to a luku.

Apuku in dreams

The apuku is often the first to warn you in a dream, and in relationships he plays a striking role. A partner cheating in your dream is sometimes read by practitioners as the work of a jealous male apuku, especially when such a dream keeps returning after intimacy. That is a reading within the tradition, not evidence about your partner.

There are favourable apuku dreams too. A partner pouring brown beer, blaka biri, over you was read by one practitioner as a good relationship dream: a man should then give his woman a pangi and blaka biri.

What an apuku asks

Practitioners mention blaka biri, a pangi from the partner and an anklet with the apuku, and black and white as colours. Beef is mentioned as an example of a trefu for apuku carriers, but trefu are personal.

Someone who keeps dreaming that a partner is cheating is advised within the tradition to have a luku done, to see whether it concerns an apuku, something else, or simply their own insecurity. A dream is no reason for an accusation.
