Dreaming of rats

A rat in a dream rarely stands only for dirt or betrayal. It is a clever, hardy animal that finds a way through anywhere, and the dream often asks where you are holding out, or what is quietly wearing you down.

Why you dream about this

Few animals divide people as sharply as the rat. For some it is the picture of dirt, neglect and the dark corners of a city. For others it is a clever, sociable animal that can be kept as a pet. In a dream the first feeling usually wins: you see a rat dart across the floor, or one sits perfectly still and watches you, and you wake with a jolt.

Yet the rat has qualities that dreams like to use. It survives almost anywhere, learns quickly, remembers routes and finds food where others see nothing. That is why a rat dream can point two ways. Towards something gnawing at you out of sight, a worry or a situation that slowly eats into your energy. Or towards your own resourcefulness, in a period when you simply have to get through.

Language adds its own layer. Someone who informs on their friends is called a rat, and rats are said to desert a sinking ship. Phrases like these slip into dreams easily. So ask yourself whether there is someone in your life the word seems to fit, or whether you are the one who wants to get out of something.

The traditions on this page each see a different rat. In China it is the first animal of the zodiac, quick-witted and thrifty. In Hinduism a small rodent carries Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. The Hebrew Bible counts it among the creeping things that make one ritually unclean, and Christians often read a gnawing animal in the light of what moth and rust consume. For mice, and for the Islamic and wicca readings of both animals, there is a separate page on mice and rats.

What it means in each tradition

The same dream. 4 traditions. 4 different ways of seeing it.

Zhou Gong

In the Chinese tradition the rat opens the zodiac. It is the first of the twelve animals and stands for cleverness, thrift and many offspring, so a rat in a dream is not automatically bad news there.

Hindu

In Hinduism the rat is above all the vahana, the mount, of Ganesha. A small rodent carries the god who removes obstacles, and that image colours how many Hindus look at a rat in a dream.

Jewish

The Hebrew Bible names the akhbar, usually translated as mouse and often taken to include the rat, among the creeping things that make one ritually unclean. At the same time Jewish tradition reminds the dreamer that much of what they see comes from their own thoughts.

Christian

The Bible gives the rat no leading role, but the Christian tradition knows the gnawing animal well. Many believers read a rat dream in the light of what wears away slowly, and of Jesus' words about worry and treasure.

These differences are not opinions about one another. Each tradition reads a dream from within its own worldview, and that worldview decides what an image carries.

Common dreams about rats

A rat running across your path

Something crossing your plans unexpectedly. Often a small disturbance that looks bigger in the dream than it is.

A white rat

White softens the image. Many read it as cleverness without threat, or as a worry that turns out to be manageable. White rats are also familiar as pets and laboratory animals, which can bring in the feeling of being watched or tested.

A rat that sits still and looks at you

A calm encounter instead of a fright. Often read as an invitation to look at something you have been avoiding.

Rats leaving a building or a ship

The old saying about the sinking ship. It can point to a sense that something is no longer holding, or that others are pulling out before you have noticed.

A dead rat

Not a prediction. Mostly read as a nuisance that has come to an end, or as something left behind that still needs clearing away.

Frequently asked questions

Is dreaming of a rat a bad sign?

Not necessarily. Rats stir disgust, but they also stand for resourcefulness and survival. What the rat did, and how you felt, says more than the animal itself.

What is the difference between dreaming of rats and of mice?

A mouse is usually read as a small, timid worry. A rat is bolder and cleverer, and brings in themes of betrayal, survival or something persistent. The page on mice and rats looks at the two together.

What does a rat mean in Chinese dream interpretation?

The rat is the first animal of the zodiac and stands for cleverness, thrift and plenty. Whether the dream is favourable depends on whether something was taken from you.

Why do I keep dreaming about rats?

Recurring rat dreams often come in busy, tense periods, or after you have actually had to deal with vermin. If dreams keep unsettling your sleep for a long time, a GP or psychologist is the right person to talk to.
