Winti

Kra

The soul or life force of a person in the Winti tradition.

In Winti the kra is understood as the inner core of a person: the part that lives, chooses and carries. Each person has their own kra, with its own nature and preferences, and a person fares well when the kra has rest and room to move. The word comes from Akan, where kra also means soul or life force.

A well-known part of the kra is its connection with the day of the week on which someone was born. Each day has its own kra name, for men and for women, such as Kwasi or Kwasiba for Sunday and Kofi or Afi for Friday. Many Surinamese families still know these names, even if they otherwise have little to do with Winti. The day says something about the nature of a person's kra and about what it needs.

Dreams often reveal the state of the kra. Images of being stuck, lost or unable to move forward can be read as a kra that is obstructed. Movement, flowing water or opening space suggest a kra that is free. A dream in which you see yourself from outside, or in which your body does not obey, is sometimes read as a restless kra.

According to the tradition the kra can lose its balance through fright, grief, tension or a hard period. People then speak of strengthening or calming the kra. The kra is treated with care: rest, a clean environment and attention belong to it. What someone does for it exactly differs by family and by line.

Dreamkin does not prescribe actions for that. Someone who wants to know what suits their own kra does best to ask within their own family or an experienced practitioner.
