Winti

Wintiprei

A winti ceremony in which winti are honoured through song, dance and trance.

A wintiprei is a ceremony in which the winti are honoured with song, drum rhythms and dance. Prei means play or celebration: it is a gathering of a family or community, often all night long, in which the winti are invoked, received and thanked. Such a celebration can be held at a special occasion, in honour of the ancestors, or because a winti asks for it.

The music is central. Each winti has its own songs and rhythms, played on drums such as the apinti. In the usual order the earth deities are invoked first, with Mama Aisa leading, and then the other pantheons. Participants often wear clothing in the colours that belong to a winti.

During a wintiprei a participant can be carried by a winti: the winti comes onto someone, as practitioners say. The person then behaves differently, speaking or moving in the manner of that winti. Experienced guides make sure this goes well.

Dreams of drums, dance, a night-time gathering or a celebration in which the atmosphere changes are sometimes connected with this context within the tradition. A dream in which you hear a song you do not know, or in which people gather in particular colours, can be read this way too. Practitioners then look at which winti belongs to it and what is being asked.

A wintiprei is not a gathering you organise yourself on the basis of a dream. It belongs to a community and to people who know what they are doing. Dreamkin does not prescribe rituals; someone with questions after a dream does best to discuss them within their own family or with an experienced practitioner.
